Poverty alleviation
& VOCATIONAL TRAINING
A quarter of Ghana's population lives below the poverty line. In northern Ghana, the poverty rate in some districts is almost 70%! We want to end poverty in northern Ghana!
The BRAVEAURORA poverty alleviation programme was originally launched to help children in the former orphanage. Many of these children were social orphans whose parents were unable to provide for them for financial reasons. The only way to reunite these children with their families was to support the families in order to make them financially independent in the long term.

EDUCATION INSTEAD OF DEPENDENCY
Ways out of poverty
Around 80-90% of the rural population is heavily dependent on agriculture, whose yields are weather-dependent. Global climate change is reducing income opportunities in agriculture. At the BRAVEAURORA training centre, people learn skilled trades and set up their own businesses with the aim of becoming less dependent on these uncertainties, thereby promoting the local economy.
Then as now, the programme offers help for self-help, enabling people to lift themselves out of poverty. It provides training, promotes micro-enterprises and creates jobs in order to strengthen families and keep children in their families. This enables participants to provide for themselves and their families independently. After completing the programme, they receive starter packs to set up their own businesses and can use microloans to expand existing businesses.

How mobile training creates opportunities
In Ghana, the differences between the north and south are strongly pronounced, particularly in terms of access to resources and education. While the south benefits from better infrastructure and economic opportunities, the north struggles with a lack of supplies and fewer opportunities. BRAVEAURORA is committed to reducing this inequality.
After the training of over 1.000 people in the training centre in Guabuliga the Mobile Skills Training (MoST) was introduced. This mobile approach brings training directly to the communities in order to facilitate access and avoid oversaturation of certain professions in individual villages. Before the programme begins, a needs analysis is carried out in order to offer targeted training courses. The communities provide venues and accommodation for the trainers, while BRAVEAURORA provides the other resources.
In cooperation with the state Institute for Vocational Training (NVTI), graduates receive official certificates. All 1,410 participants successfully passed the exams thereby creating new prospects for their future

BRAVEAURORA's commitment to Ghana's future
Another major problem in northern Ghana is the phenomenon of the ‘Kayaye’. These are young women who leave their home villages to seek work in the southern parts of the country. They usually look for work around markets. The Kayaye are exposed to serious problems, as these young women often end up in prostitution.
In order to escape poverty and all its associated problems, BRAVEAURORA has worked with the village population to develop alternative approaches to opening up new economic sectors and helping local people to provide for themselves and their families in a sustainable manner. These include, for example, the training centre, the microcredit programme and BRAVEAURORA's organic gardening project.
