More than half of the population still lives in poverty, whereas the northern part is affected. Living in poverty means being unable to afford food and other basic household products and that the annual income per person is less than 240 euros. It is life-threatening, even more in remote villages than in cities. The cause of rural poverty has many roots: Low education, bad health and low income to name a few. Likewise, the rural region of Ghana is exposed to extreme weather conditions – several months of drought can be followed by heavy rains in the summer months, which wash away parts of the road (eg if you want to travel to the village of Guabuliga, which supports BRAVEAURORA during the summer months).

Another big problem in Northern Ghana is the phenomenon of “Kayaye”. Women leaving their home villages to seek work in the southern parts of the country and often end up in prostitution.

To avoid poverty and all its associated problems, BRAVEAURORA has worked with the villagers to develop alternative approaches opening new economic sectors, to sustain themselves and their families. These include, for example, the training center, the microcredit program or the biological garden project of BRAVEAURORA.
